    Slow Computer- Another one

    ATTN: OracleGuy

Computer has been running verrrry slowly past several days. The problem only occurs when online. I tried to System Restore but SR will not restore to ANY prvious point. Hopefully, this problem is significant to the problem with speed. At any rate, I think I have tried all the usual things such as defrag, reboot, Adware, Spybot, CWShredder. I read of a similar problem in a post by 'smartaleck' and discussed my problem with him. He said that his problem had been corrected so I am trying the same thing. Below is a log from HijackThis. Hope you can help. Thanks!! Jim

    O2 - BHO: mwsBar BHO - {07B18EA1-A523-4961-B6BB-170DE4475CCA} -
    C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\a.bin\MWSBAR.DLL

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} -
    C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsB.dll

Unless you installed them specifically, the two above are both spyware.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsA.exe

Is also spyware known as Adware.Huntbar.

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MyWebSearch Email Plugin] C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\9.bin\mwsoemon.exe

Is related to the MyWebSearch so needs removing as well.

Sort the above out, I'll keep looking through to see what else I can spot.

    --------

EDIT - OK these need removing too -

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsB.dll

    O2 - BHO: MyWebSearch Search Assistant BHO - {00A6FAF1-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\SrchAstt\9.bin\MWSSRCAS.DLL

    O23 - Service: WinTools for IE service (WinToolsSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsS.exe

    --------

EDIT 2 - Did you install an Outlook spam blocker? If not, remove -

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Spam Blocker for Outlook Express] C:\PROGRA~1\Hotbar\bin\450~1.0\SBInst.exe

It contains adware but isn't particularly harmful. Remove if not needed.

You need to remove the R1's where the url starts with websearch.com - a program has hijacked your search pages.

    And finally, remove -

    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search -http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearc...p=ZBzeb030YYUS

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs and see if you can uninstall the spyware. From what I can see you're infected with the following -

    MyWebSearch - http://www.spywareremove.com/removeMyWebSearch.html
    Adware.Huntbar - http://www.pchell.com/support/huntbar.shtml
    WinTools - http://www.pchell.com/support/wintools.shtml
    SBInst.EXE - Adware.HotBar/SpamBlockerUtility ( http://www.pchell.com/support/hotbar.shtml ? )

Use the links above to see how to remove them properly.

In regards of system restore, I believe that if one restore point becomes corrupt, they all become corrupt because of the way they are saved/stored on a single data table.

As Mark's pointed out, you have a lot of malware on there. It appears from the log if hijackthis that IE has been hijacked w/ search assistants etc...these need removing.

Thanks guys! I will start removing what you have pointed out.

Here are a couple of other thoughts: Where I tried System Restore before and had no luck, I have been playing with it for the last couple of hours. I was able to create a restore point for today. From there I started backward and was able to restore on 12/1, 11/30, 11/29, & 11/28. When I tried to restore to 11/25 the computer was unable to do so...I tried 11/28 again and was unable; restored to 12/1 and then tried to restore to 11/30 again and was unable. I continued the experiment and, bottom line, sometimes I could restore to a specific date/time and when I would try to restore to that same date another time I was unable. I don;t understand!! Is any of this significant? Does anyone think there is a connection to the "junk" which I am about to remove from the Hijack log? Thanks again!

I want to thank you guys again for the help here! My problem, however, seems to be the same. I made the deletions from the HijackThis scan log as suggested by Mark87.

As to the links mentioned by Mark87, the 1st one gave me a free scan by Spyhunter. It requires a $30 purchase to use the removal feature. Is this necessary? (The scan found these items for removal: 52 Registry, 15 Cookies, 14 Files). I followed the suggestions made in links 2 & 3 receiving no feedback. In link 4, Hotbar was "successfully uninstalled".

Here again in another HijackThis scan log. Any more suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I'd suggest running Spybot Search & Destroy before trying to remove stuff via hijackthis. Below are some recommendations of stuff that looks suspect.

Since you have XP SP2, if its legal (hopefully it is) I would highly recommend Microsoft AntiSpyware (Beta) (available free on microsoft.com) as I've found it to be extremely effective. I just read recently that Consumer Reports rated it #1 spyware scanner over all the freebies and pay for ones. It seems to work best that you install and update it, then boot in safe mode for scanning (running the scan in FULL mode, not quick), to prevent any counter anti-spyware tactics from being executed in windows by the spyware.
PS. Safe mode seems to be the best thing to do for any of the approaches you take!
