Question unmounting volumes and reformatting win2k

when i try to reformat, i get a message saying that the volume is being used by another process, and if i want to force a dismount on this volume. I click yes, but it says that it cannot lock the drive, and the process will not continue. I've gone in disk management and click on my c: drive, and go to "change drive letter and path" and try to dismount but it cant because it cannot remove the drive letter of my system or boot volume. Does anyone know how to unmount and reformat?

help with this problem will be greatly appreciated.

    thanks

You can not reformat a system drive (i.e. C: ) from windows, as it is in constant use. You need to get your windows 2000 cd, which is bootable and then boot from cd when the computer starts up rather than booting off your hard disk..

There you will have options for reinstalling your OS, reformatting etc

    that should work

ok i booted from the cd but in the menu i cannot delete the partition to reformat. I see the C: 78570 MB yadda yadda partition, but the option is not accessable to delete it. I also tried to go into the recovery console and logged on as administrator, typed format c: /fs:ntfs and it says that all will be deleted from drive c:!!! i hit Y, and it just sends me back to the C:/WINNT command.

You can not delete the primary partition, you can only reformat it. I would have thought that when you boot from cd, after arriving at the "which partition do you want to install windows on" you select the primary one. After then, it should just say installing windows 2000.

You should be able to delete it the partition if you want to, you did it from the screen where it asks you to select where you want to install Windows. However if you do not want to change your partition configuration, just select your C: drive and then it will ask you if you want to format the drive first or leave the filesystem intact, say format with NTFS and you'll be all set.
