    Non-invasive .tgz desquisher for Win?

I keep running across all sorts of acedemia available for download--only in the tar.gz format, but Windows seems to have nothing native for extracting the data.

After searching around, there look to be a few all-in-one programs capable of that, but the last time I tried one of those, it leached associations for a bunch of file types (even though I deselected them, it refused to ever give them back).

Well, anyway, I'm just wondering if there's a combination of console apps (that I could glue together with script for this purpose), instead.
I noticed an msdos one for .gz at the gzip home page, but they only seemed to mention using gui apps for tar.gz...

    suggestions?

How about 7zip? It doesn't even steal the .zip format from explorer per default.

I use Compress 2000 - http://hard-code.com/Products/Compress/ It works well, can open and create all kinds of tar and gzip variants, and it doesn't take over other archive formats if you tell it not to at install.

MVC is the current buzz in web application architectures. It comes from event-driven desktop application design and doesn't fit into web application design very well. But luckily nobody really knows what MVC means, so we can call our presentation layer separation mechanism MVC and move on. (Rasmus Lerdorf)

Anything likely to do nothing more than that is fine by me...
