Why Does Internet Explorer Not Work???

You usually I can sus most problems but this one has really got me stumped.
One day while surfing broadband my Internet Explorer V.6 stopped dislpaying pages and come up with "Page cannot be displayed". Now matter what I have done it still does not work, so I'm settling with Firefox for now but OMG so many websites you can't access with Firefox. Heres all the things I have done:

    • Setting the encryption to 128 bit
    • Un-installing and Re-installing Internet Explorer
    • System restoring back to when it works
    • All the things listed on the "This page cannot be displayed" page

Please if anyone can tell me how to get it up and running again I would be grateful!

To me, there is no point to use IEvil apart from testing websites and using windows update - it is obselete.
However, if system restore and reinstalling it didnt work, then I say reformat your system .
Also check your pc for any cr*p like Adware, Spyware, Viruses...stuff like that.

Well, I'am going to reformat the system soon as it's becoming mine instead of a shared computer so I will want to wipe of all the crap and save my stuff onto a CD/RW so it doesn't matter, it's just the other people who use the computer dunt like firefox but once it's mine I dont care

    yup - good plan
You could always get a additional hard disk and save your work on there instead of CD - faster and more cost effective if you are trying to shift a couple of gigs of data

Viruses can effect your computer way after you've been infected. Perhaps run spy/adware checkers and a virus scanner?

I know, I run a virus/spyware/adware check on all files I download then when I install them I make sure my definitions are update to date then run another virus scan so it's unlikely it's a virus

Could just be that something screwy got onto your system and damaged IEvil beyond repair/healing by your AV/Adware/Syware Clients..

btw, what AV client do you have?

I am running Norton Internet Securty and Anti-Virus 2005 also I use system mechanic 5 or 6 to check and delete spyware/adware. Good point made although NAV whudda said something about it being beyond repair I would of thought

Anything Norton (except Ghost and maybe Utilities) is evil - I absolutley hate Norton Antivirus, the firewall isn't the best, and Internet Security is unstable (at least it was when I tried it)

AVG detects threats a LOT more accuratly than Norton ever could. When I scanned my system with NAV, it was clean. 1/2 hour later I installed AVG, and it found 8 low-threat trojans on my computer....AVG is way better than Norton.

As for Spyware, Lavasoft Adaware SE 1.5 is excellent, so is Sybot Seatch and Destroy.

I think your copy of IEvil has been damaged by a trojan or such like that has got onto your machine. NAV might not be able to detect it, so it reporting that your system is clean of viruses/trojans if you have scanned it.

    Lavasoft Adaware SE 1.5 - www.lavasoft.de

people always forget this third one...
    1) Viruses
    2) Spyware
    3) Browser Helper Objects (BHO's)

(maybe because most folk on here use Firefox to browse the web as it's immune to BHO's)

In Internet Options control Panel click on "programs" and "manage add ons" if you have XP SP2 installed. Then disable any BHO's in this list.

Alternatively try BHO Demon - install and run this to detect all BHO's present on the system and disable them that way.

I don't really forget them, but I class them the same as Adware/Spyware, when they are really totally different. However, Firefox rules, and everyone knows that

Anyhow - Hijackthis is great for shifting BHO's
