XP not allowing me to delete my files

I am doing some cleanup of the hard drive and have three files that won't delete because they are "in use by another application".

    I have tried:

    1. Deleting in both file manager, and DOS
    2. Reopening the files in the only program that will use them (Photoshop .psd files) and closing them again (no difference)
    3. Log in as administrator in safe mode, again trying both file manager and DOS to delete them
    4. Searching for a tmp version of the file to delete first (none found)

Although the files present no other problems I still want to get rid of them. Any other suggestions?

Could you post the names of the files? They might be system files or they might be in use by system files. You said you already tried safe mode? If it didn't work in safe mode and if they're not system files, they're probably some kind of virus or malware. Run a scan with ur updated Antivirus in safe mode.

I've had this issue with (attempting) deleting various ~700mb sized files, definitely not system files. I'm kind of curious if anyone knows a solution.

i'm sure i wrote a post about this a while back, i'll try and find a link to it.

The problem is caused when windows "locks" files when using them and forgets to unlock them afterwards. Its mainly .exe files in my experience.

http://www.softwarepatch.com/software/moveonboot.html is a nice utility that when installed allows you to right click the files and select "delete file on next boot" which will then remove them on restart.

No weazel, don't reformat until there's nothing more to do. Why not try sweenster's suggestion?

I've had it too. There's a series of problems, all of them related to impropertly used file locks. Some of them can be fixed by closing the process that put the lock, some of them can only be solved by never starting the process in the first place.

Anyway, it's like this: Programs like some antiviri programs, file sharing tools, media players, graphics viewers and the like place locks on the files they are working with. Sometimes these locks are entirely proper (you don't want a song to be deleted or changed while you are playing it, for example) but sometimes the programs forget to open the locks when they are finished and instead only open them when the process is terminated. Some programs, like ACDSee, lock all folders they view, and caches the thumbnails in them. Those locks are only opened when the cache is purged.

It's not always evident what the offending program is, though...

tboss, the files are just .psd files I created myself for college.

I'm going to try moveonboot, although I just tried to download it and couldn't connect.

Thanks for the replies everyone. If and when I get rid of these files I'll post another reply.
