    Avast Grimefighter

I hope this is the correct forum.

Following extensive nagging and claims that I had 17 issues slowing up my machine I purchased and installed Avast Grimefighter. This was mainly because I have used Avast anti-virus for many years with complete satisfaction, and hence trusted them. It has proved a bit of a disaster. It did not explain until it had started that it could take from 30 minutes to several hours to do the analysis - this meant I lost 45 minutes at the start of the working day. The result was that the progam deleted several desktop icons (including Windows Live Mail!!) which took some trouble to restore from backups. Apart from that I cannot see that it has done anything. My computer runs just as well as before, and today the boot-up time was longer than usual, not shorter as claimed.

I am beginning to wonder if this GrimeFighter is a scam - does nothing for 40 minutes, then reports that a lot of snake oil has been applied and your computer is cured.

I was also displeased that the purchase procedure authorised annual renewal of the subscription (£14.99 now as an offer , doubtless a lot more next year) without my consent. It is possible to negate this, but the procedure is long-winded and difficult. This renewal without express consent is close to dishonesty in my opinion.

My advice regarding Avast Grimefighter is - AVOID.

All the code given in this post has been tested and is intended to address the question asked.
Unless stated otherwise it is not just a demonstration.

We (as a repair shop) LOVE grimefighter, its hilariously bad, it loads a live linux image which I think has about 1 or 2 sata drivers pre-loaded actually thats good for the user since mostly it then it can't do any damage and we just have to reset the windows boot loader.
In the rare occurrence it actually boots then yes it can cause more issues, awful bit of kit.
As for the Norton-esque nasty re-billing .. ouch, hopefully its easier to cancel then a Norton or Trend subscription.
    resistance is...

MVC is the current buzz in web application architectures. It comes from event-driven desktop application design and doesn't fit into web application design very well. But luckily nobody really knows what MVC means, so we can call our presentation layer separation mechanism MVC and move on. (Rasmus Lerdorf)

Avast Grimefighter pop-up offers free scan NOT free clean up. Pop up gives the impression the clean-up is free so unless you want to pay £10 - £20 don't waste time on the scan.

This sort of trickery has put me off avast. That is the last time that I will spend money with them. It is a foolish business strategy to destroy your customer's trust.
