Set up a network so someone not on my wifi can join it

Is it possible to set up a network so my friend who lives about 30 mins away from me can join it? We both have internet access.

The reason being i want to be able to play a game with him using the network option but obviously we need to be on the same network to be able to see each others pc's. We both use windows 7

Well if the game allows you to connect by IP what you can do is the person who is hosting can forward the port on their router to their PC. Then the other person would just enter in the host's public IP.

If you can't do that then what you need to do is setup a VPN. That will allow you to both appear to be on the same local network. Take a look at OpenVPN.

    Which game is it?

Ill take a look at OpenVPN as i cant seem to see an option for an IP address

Its Lord of the rings battle for middle earth 2. I would use the online option but my friends doesn't work. No matter how many times he reinstalls it, updates it, checks all the ports it needs etc it just fails, so we're gonna try network as if im at his and connect to his network it works fine.
