    Becomming A Programmer: Realistic?

I am in the New York City area with a background as a writer, blogger and journalist. In addition, I have taken collegiate online courses in Web Design and Development and Internet Marketing. So I'm well rounded, but not an expert at any one field.

So how realistic is it for me to study hard through Code Academy and Lynda, etc. and become a mobile app/web developer and land a solid job?

Is it a long shot, or is it something that is pretty likely if I dedicate the necessary time?

    I need a career change .... bad!

It may sound cheesy but you can be whatever you believe in. It’s certainly not a matter of a few weeks to become a professional programmer but there are lots of people that jump into a new profession at a later stage in their life, and are successful. You just have to do it. Learn programming, specialize in a field so you become really good in it. I would say to employers in the IT business actual skills matter more than a degree of some kind. So build stuff yourself to build a portfolio that you can show. Perhaps on the way you will become a successful freelancer and don’t even need a fixed employment.

You don't need a college degree to land an IT job.

It might be challenging to get hired on with just some courses and being self taught. Your best bet IMO is to land a permanent job somewhere related to writing/blogging/journalism, and then dedicate yourself to taking on some development work. Just volunteer to do small jobs, like perhaps taking over a small internal website. Just try and take something on that is programming related. Make it your responsibility. This will give you a bullet point for the resume that is true experience (over your course work and self study work).

Earning the necessary education is always a major positive for any profession you may wish to move into. College shows that you have the commitment and ability to finish what you begin. Add to that the fact that you will still be working while doing this and your resume becomes that much stronger over all. The fact that you have been able to earn a living full time as a writer is a major bonus if you use it properly, as well. I am assuming you already earned a degree of some type in order to even earn a living as a journalist and writer in those fields.
